Our award-winning media outlet: East County Magazine
The Heartland Coalition is proud to sponsor our award-winning nonprofit media outlet, East County Magazine www.EastCountyMagazine.org. East County Magazine’s mission is to provide in-depth news coverage for San Diego’s inland region, reflecting all voices and views—particularly those under-represented in other media. East County Magazine has won dozens of top journalism awards including first-place honors for investigative reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists and San Diego Press Club. The site was named best general interest news site by San Diego Press Club. Editor Miriam Raftery has received over 100 career journalism awards. Most recently, she received the James Julian Memorial Award for community reporting from SPJ’s San Diego Chapter for her investigative series that led FEMA to back down on refund demands for disaster funds paid to local wildfire survivors. ECM has also won honors for environmental and multicultural reporting, and many other categories. East County Magazine also started and operates the Viejas Wildfire and Emergency Alerts, a free public service that provides e-mail and Twitter alerts of major emergencies countywide, dedicated to keeping people safe and informed. Through collaboration on a number of different projects, East County Magazine is an indispensable partner organization that helps us reach our goals.
